What is PEPPOL?

PEPPOL is an eProcurement standard which is being deployed in the UK as part of the Scan4Safety initiative (www.scan4safety.nhs.uk) and is a set of specifications that enables trading partners to exchange standards-based electronic documents such as e-Orders and e-Invoices over the PEPPOL network.

The use of PEPPOL is governed by a multi-lateral agreement structure which is owned and maintained by OpenPEPPOL. The Department of Health eProcurement Strategy, published in May 2014 with subsequent additions and updates, mandates the use of PEPPOL standards for UK healthcare providers and suppliers. A PEPPOL Access Point connects users to the PEPPOL network, enabling the exchange of electronic documents based on the PEPPOL specifications.

What actions you need to take and how GHX can support you

In the UK, both healthcare providers and suppliers are required to sign up to a PEPPOL Access Point to comply with the mandate set out by the Department of Health. Signing up to a PEPPOL Access Point will provide you with the capabilities to transact as required and therefore make you compliant.

If you are using GHX eCommerce trading solutions, such as GHX Exchange or Pharmacy Messaging Service, you are already connected to our certified PEPPOL Access Point and are therefore compliant. Please contact your GHX account manager if you have any queries with regards to your PEPPOL readiness.

If you are not yet a GHX customer you will need to sign up to an Access Point as soon as possible. As a certified PEPPOL Access Point we are ready to get you connected quickly and easily to support you to be compliant.

What’s the current status?

We are navigating a complex framework, working in close partnership with the Department of Health, the Scan4Safety Demonstrator Sites, NHS Supply Chain and the other Access Points, to test interoperability and facilitate PEPPOL implementation. This is an ongoing process that will require time but will ultimately enable us to achieve our mutual goals.
