2018 Winner: Alberta Health Services

  • Alberta Health Services (AHS) has played a critical role in advancing the adoption of global data standards, working collaboratively with suppliers, GHX and GS1 Canada in the development of a product registry that facilitates the use of unique device identifiers (UDI) within clinical information systems.
  • Through this registry, AHS will link its supply chain with its Epic electronic health record (EHR) system, which enables point of use product scanning, and capture of UDI data for product traceability and recall tracking/management. Today, AHS has a product scan rate of over 90 percent.
  • With the implementation of this integrated clinical supply chain product flow, AHS will be able to collect data to measure outcomes, enable value-based procurement and have product level data linked to patients and outcomes to support informed decision making.
