Recognizing the operational, financial and clinical value that global data standards can bring to the healthcare supply chain, GHX helps its members successfully use standards in transactions with business partners. A few of their stories follow:
BJC HealthCare GS1 standards implementation
BJC HealthCare (BJC), one of the largest nonprofit health care organizations in the United States, successfully worked with GHX and GS1 Healthcare US to implement use of global industry standards in business transactions with suppliers and other healthcare trading partners. Today, BJC is using GS1 Global Location Numbers (GLNs) in all of its purchase orders transmitted through the GHX exchange and is prepared to transact with GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) as its vendors enumerate their products with this standard.

"While it would be ideal if we could send only the GLNs in our transactions with suppliers, the reality is that not all of our suppliers are ready to accept them,” said Thomas M. Stenger, Jr., manager of MMIS & Analysis for BJC HealthCare. “GHX enables us to transact with suppliers that are ready, as well as those that are in transition, to prevent any disruptions and keep the flow of business moving."
Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics GTIN standardization and synchronization
Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics, part of the Siemens Healthcare Sector, partnered with GHX to establish a single point of truth for its products by enumerating with GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) and uploading product data into GS1’s Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN) via the GHX Health ConneXion[SM] data pool. To date, Siemens has enumerated a significant proportion of its products worldwide with GTINs and plans to be fully enumerated well ahead of the December 2012 sunrise date. As of May 2011, Siemens had published GDSN product data for its entire U.S. product line via the GHX Health ConneXion data pool. Siemens is also working with GHX to publish GTINs for additional product lines in Australia and Europe.

"The attributes can be a major stumbling block for manufacturers because there is so much data to collect," said David Leedam, senior manager of e-Commerce for Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics. "Initially, we were going to load GTINs for only a few products, but after consulting with GHX, we extracted information for every product that had a GTIN. Within a half hour, the data was in hand and being prepared by GHX for upload."
Premier GLN transaction program
GHX has played a key role as an exchange partner for healthcare providers participating in the Premier GLN transaction program, enabling program participants Boston Medical Center, Banner Health and Summa Health System to successfully transact GLNs electronically in business transactions with trading partners.
